Marlene belongs in St. Peter-Ording just as much as the stilt houses on the beach. She loves and lives the traditions of Eiderstedt and works every day to preserve them. To this end, the 72-year-old even had her own traditional costume made.

For many years now, Marlene has been volunteering and supporting numerous projects in St. Peter-Ording and on the Eiderstedt Peninsula. Even in her role as chairwoman of the local German Red Cross chapter, the well-being of her fellow residents is her top priority. For many locals, Marlene is like a rock in the surf—a rock that withstands even the fiercest storm surges and on which one can always rely.

In 1972, Marlene was the first woman to be accepted into the Tetenbüll Ringreiterverein and to be allowed to compete.

The Heart and Soul of Eiderstedt

Marlene Pauly-Burchatzky grew up on the beautiful Eiderstedt Peninsula. In 1974, the now 72-year-old moved to St. Peter-Ording.

After completing her training as a paramedic, Marlene joined the Red Cross; she has been chairwoman of the local Red Cross chapter since 2010. Anyone who knows Marlene knows that her heart is in the right place and that she finds it hard to say “no.” She has held various volunteer positions for many years, organizes game afternoons and outings, and visits the nursing home once a week. At the Nordsee-Domizil, where she herself lives, she is the go-to person for residents around the clock—but for many here, she is much more than that.

Marlene can’t get enough of horses—she was active in equestrian sports for many years. Today, she enjoys spending her free time knitting, embroidering, walking, and swimming. She speaks low german and is firmly convinced that Eiderstedt’s traditions must be preserved and protected. Whenever she can, the 72-year-old slips into her traditional costume. Helpful and full of care and love, she supports others and stands up for her fellow residents.

That’s Marlene. A true SPO everyday hero.
