Trip to the lighthouse "Westerhever"

A visit to the famous Westerheversand Lighthouse is an absolute must. It’s the region’s landmark. The trail leading there winds through the foreland and the salt marshes. You’ll stroll through unspoiled nature, listen to the wind, and watch birds. The route along the dike (approx. 17 km) is ideal for biking—even with a dog trailer—or you can use the parking lot behind the dike and hike the scenic trail through the salt marshes to the tower.

Important for dog owners: The direct path to the lighthouse passes through a sensitive nature reserve. Dogs must be kept on a leash year-round, and some sensitive breeding areas near the tower are off-limits to dogs during certain seasons. A walk along the paved main path to the forecourt is generally permitted with a dog on a leash.

Fascinating Nature & Landscapes

Katinger Watt & "Eidersperrwerk" (flood barrier)

For many, it’s the first stop on their way to Eiderstedt: "Eidersperrwerk" (flood barrier). It protects the inland areas from the North Sea’s massive storm surges. You can walk across the flood barrier with your dog and feel the power of the water up close. A real highlight and also the perfect spot for your first fish sandwich with a view.

Right behind the "Eidersperrwerk" (flood barrier), another natural highlight of Eiderstedt unfolds: the Katinger Watt. This area was created by the construction of the "Eidersperrwerk" and offers a fascinating mix of forest, bodies of water, and meadows. Here you’ll find numerous well-maintained hiking trails that are perfect for walks with your dog. The trees provide shade in the summer, and the observation huts invite you to study the rich birdlife. Dogs must be kept on a leash here as well, so as not to disturb nature.

Whether you’re looking for treats for on the go, a new toy, or handy accessories for the beach, in St. Peter-Ording you’ll find shops where you can stock up on everything you and your dog need for your vacation. For regional products and unique souvenirs, it’s worth taking a trip to the farm stands in Eiderstedt. Many farm stands are located in rural areas and can easily be combined with a walk with your dog.

Many bike rental shops also offer dog trailers, handcarts, or cargo bikes for a shared getaway. For the perfect cycling destination or simply some time at the beach, St. Peter-Ording has three dog-friendly areas—two on the beach and one in the town center, sheltered in the woods. After running around on the beach, it’s time to relax. At all five beach sections, you’ll find marked beach chair platforms in the dog-friendly areas. Here, you can enjoy the salty North Sea air together and let your gaze wander over the sandbank and the North Sea waves.

After a bike ride or a long walk, cafés, farm cafés, and restaurants in St. Peter-Ording and Eiderstedt invite you to take a break. Most of the dining establishments on the peninsula are happy to welcome dogs.
