Every day, numerous long-distance trains operated by Deutsche Bahn AG run directly to Schleswig-Holstein’s vacation destinations. From here—and also from many locations outside of Germany’s northernmost state—you can travel from May through September, and in some cases even year-round, reach the Eiderstedt Peninsula directly every hour with just one transfer in Husum. From Tönning, the train route passes through many small stops and stations before reaching the final destination of St. Peter-Ording.

Complete Closure of the B5 from June to December 2026
Between June 22, 2026, and December 4, 2026, the B5 will be completely closed between the Heide-West interchange on the A23 and the Hemme interchange on the B5.
Detours have been set up to ensure that traffic to and from Eiderstedt can continue.
Half-lane closure on Eiderstedt Straße, July–August 2026
The L33 (Eiderstedt Straße) will be partially closed (one side) from July 6 through August 31, 2026, between the Am Kurpark junction (Bad train station) and the Schulstraße intersection (major intersection leading to the market square). This is a moving construction site along the route.
The “Westmarken” railroad crossing (sidewalk) will be temporarily closed to all traffic during the construction work.

Traveling by Car
The Eiderstedt Peninsula and St. Peter-Ording are easy to reach by car. With a car, you’ll have complete freedom of movement once you’re there and can head directly to all the attractions on the peninsula. Depending on which direction you’re coming from, we’ve put together information on how to get here in the overview below.
By Car to Eiderstedt
Coming from the north, follow the B5 from Niebüll toward Husum and drive past Husum toward Tönning/Heide. From there, turn right onto the B202 just before Tönning and follow this road, which will take you through Eiderstedt to St. Peter-Ording.
Coming from the east, take the A7 toward Flensburg until you reach the Schleswig-Schuby interchange. Here, exit the highway toward Husum, Schleswig, Kappeln, B201. After about 28 kilometers, turn left onto the B5 toward Heide/Tönning/Hamburg. Follow the B5 past Husum and, just before Tönning, turn onto the B202 toward St. Peter-Ording.
From the Hamburg-Nordwest (25) highway interchange, take the A23 toward Heide/Husum until you reach the Heide-West junction, then take the B203 toward Büsum/Wesselburen. After passing through Wesselburen, take the L305 past the "Eidersperrwerk" (flood barrier) and you’ll reach the Eiderstedt Peninsula; St. Peter-Ording is about another half-hour’s drive from there. Alternatively, from Heide-West, take the B5 to Tönning and continue on the B202 via Eiderstedt to St. Peter-Ording.
Traveling by Plane
Hamburg Airport is the hub for air travel in the north. From there, it’s an hour and a half (140 kilometers) via the A23 by rental car or shuttle service—and your vacation can begin.
