Westerhever in Eiderstedt

Located directly on the North Sea and near St. Peter-Ording, the municipality of Westerhever lies in the northwest of the Eiderstedt Peninsula. Behind the dike, the surrounding landscape is characterized by lush green meadows and vast fields; in front of the dike lies the unique Wadden Sea, a World Natural Heritage Site, and the landmark of the North Sea: the lighthouse "Westerhever". Nestled in a lush salt marsh landscape, here at the northwestern tip of Eiderstedt—accessible only on foot or by bike—time seems to stand still. The Westerheversand Lighthouse is far more than a landmark—it’s a place full of magic!

Nestled among lush salt marshes, where numerous sheep graze peacefully, stands what is probably the most photographed attraction on the North Sea: the red-and-white-striped lighthouse "Westerhever".

Construction and Operation of the Lighthouse

Built between 1906 and 1908, a separate mound was constructed to support the 41.5-meter-high lighthouse. To anchor its substantial weight of 130 metric tons in the soft mudflats, the foundation was built on 127 oak piles. The lighthouse is still in operation today—controlled by computer from Tönning—and, at nightfall, its beam shines 50 kilometers out over the sea.

Two lighthouse houses

On the mound, next to the lighthouse, stand the two well-known houses where the lighthouse keeper once lived with his family. Today, one of the houses serves as the headquarters of the Wadden Sea Conservation Station. During a storm surge, the area is “under water,” meaning the mound is completely surrounded by water.

Right in the heart of the unique Wadden Sea National Park and World Natural Heritage Site, the Wadden Sea Conservation Station Westerhever is located on the mound of the lighthouse "Westerhever". Stockenstieg

The path to the lighthouse is marked by a rare example of traditional path construction: the 1,200-meter-long, historic “Stockenstieg,” built of clinker bricks, was originally the only paved access route to the lighthouse. Out of consideration for migratory and breeding birds, this cultural monument is accessible only from June through September.

From April through October, you can also experience the lighthouse in the evening light on select dates—not just during the day. And when you climb to the top, the observation deck offers a sweeping view of the Wadden Sea, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site—and with a little luck, you’ll be treated to a sunset you’ll never forget.

Nature Experiences in Westerhever

Barefoot toward the horizon—a walk to the seemingly endless Westerhever sandbank is an unforgettable experience. Nine kilometers long and surrounded by a wonderful silence, there it lies. Not a soul is in sight far and wide as you stroll toward the horizon, feeling the sand beneath your feet and letting your thoughts drift into the distance. Before setting out, it’s important to check the tide calendar carefully, as the sandbank can be flooded at high tide.

A sand sculpture made only of sand and water? Yes, it’s possible—and it’s a ton of fun! In the workshop at Sandiek, the sand sculpture studio in Westerhever, you’ll first learn the basics of what you can do with sand. Then you’ll put your hands-on skills to the test as you shovel, tamp, and carve the blocks of sand. It’s impressive how, under expert guidance, interesting sculptures can emerge practically out of thin air. Since the workshops take place in a heated hall, they’re open to everyone—even in bad weather.
