Beach buggies on three wheels

Beach sailing, like the distinctive stilt houses, is part of the unmistakable beach scenery of St. Peter-Ording. With large sails and at breakneck speeds, these sleek craft race across the sand. The tradition of beach sailing in Europe dates back to the 17th century and was first practiced around 1600 on the Dutch coast.

Sports with a Long History

Wind, open space, and speed—that’s what makes beach sailing so special! As early as the 1930s, beach sailors were already out on the beach at St. Peter-Ording.

Beach sailers are three-wheeled vehicles with sails that are powered exclusively by the wind. Under optimal wind conditions, these lightweight vehicles can reach speeds of over 100 km/h. On the large sandbank in SPO, beach sailors find perfect conditions for their sport.

The regatta and practice areas for beach sailers are located south of the Bad swimming area (accessible via the pier from the spa center) on the so-called Hitzsand. The pilots are members of the SPO Yacht Club. The club has been in existence for over 100 years in St. Peter-Ording. Today, the St. Peter-Ording Yacht Club regularly hosts regattas and competitions with national and international participants—a great opportunity for you to experience the action firsthand and get a taste of sailing.
