Osterhever on Eiderstedt

Are you looking for peace and relaxation? Then you’ll feel right at home in Osterhever, in the north of the Eiderstedt Peninsula, right next to the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. Surrounded by vast green polders, the stress and hustle and bustle of everyday life are quickly forgotten here.

Dikes and Köge as a Distinctive Feature

The village of Osterhever was originally diked as an island, and the place name roughly translates to “east of the Hever.” Over the course of centuries, the construction of dikes around the surrounding polders—especially the Augustenkoog and the Norderheverkoog—helped Osterhever achieve a protected location behind the dike.

St. Martin's Church

In the heart of Osterhever, built on a mound, stands St. Martin’s Church. The bell tower houses one of the largest bells on the Eiderstedt Peninsula. Of particular interest are the richly carved altarpiece from 1520 and the “Madonna on the Crescent Moon,” which only returned to St. Martin’s in 2010 after being stored at the Flensburg City Museum for over 100 years.
