Poppenbüll on Eiderstedt

Nature, endless expanses, and blue skies: Welcome to Poppenbüll. Located between Osterhever and Garding, this is likely the oldest diked area on the Eiderstedt Peninsula. Haubargs, mound settlements, old dikes, marshes, and a Tauteich pond—which once served as a source of fresh water—surround the village, at the center of which stand St. Johannis Church and a bustling village square. Set out on a discovery tour by bike and explore the vast landscape along well-maintained, idyllic side roads and farm trails, where sheep and cattle graze and flocks of birds rest or nest.

The sprawling community of Poppenbüll has a beautiful town center with its church and village square, where there are quite a few unique features to discover.

St. Johannis Church

Nearly every village in Eiderstedt has a time-honored church, and Poppenbüll is no exception. Located next to the village square, the richly decorated St. Johannis Church invites visitors to pause and reflect. During a visit to the church, you can admire its architecture, a bronze baptismal font—unique to Eiderstedt—and the oldest surviving portrait of an Eiderstedt pastor, which is depicted on the epitaph on the church wall.

Village Square

Whether it’s a lively village festival, a colorful children’s party, a cozy barbecue evening, or just a quick chat—this is where the village comes together! The village square, right next to the church, is the perfect spot to take a quick break during your tour of Poppenbüll and the Eiderstedt Peninsula.

In the village square, the popular gathering place in the center of Poppenbüll, there is an architectural curiosity: a replica of a “Vierrutenbarg.” A Vierrutenbarg is an early form of the Haubarg (traditional farm housing). It is an open harvest barn that was used in earlier times to store hay. The key feature of this open barn is its roof, which can be adjusted in height.

Village Chronicle

As arguably the oldest diked area on the Eiderstedt peninsula, it’s no surprise that Poppenbüll even has its own local history society! Its members meticulously search for new insights and details about the village’s origins and its unique features. The active society has already published several local histories. By the way: Every year, it also publishes its own Poppenbüll calendar featuring photos from the community.

SpinnWebKate

At the quaint Nickelswarft, Ms. Rölke has set up SpinnWebKate, a unique and incredibly cozy workshop featuring dozens of looms and even a hand-operated Jacquard loom—the kind you’d normally only see in museums. Here, she lovingly handcrafts scarves, blankets, rugs, and much more from linen and wool—each piece one-of-a-kind. Not only can you marvel at the ancient craft of hand weaving here, but you can also learn it yourself in classes.

Distinctive Landscape Features

Helmfleeth Thaw Pond

A unique feature of the Eiderstedt landscape can be admired in Poppenbüll: the Helmfleeth dew pond was once used for freshwater collection. Dew ponds, also known as “Himmelsteiche,” were created about 1,000 years ago. To create them, a depression was lined with reeds, coated with clay, and fire-hardened. The morning dew collected in this way ensured a supply of drinking water for livestock even during the dry summer months.
